We put our gDiapers through the ringer. Since we’ve got two in diapers, they are washed constantly, during which time I hear the “cha-ching” of dollars saved singing to me from the laundry room. In our effort to be ever more Mustachian, we recently took on GroVia cloth wipes as well. Needless to say, the cloth as served us well, and we use a lot of it. And we must be real suckers for laundry. Up until recently, we’d been using the gDiapers disposable/flushable inserts at night, placed on top of a cloth insert. The flushies are insanely absorbent; and lets face it, absorbency is important for my sleeping girls to stay sleeping so mommy can stay sleeping. I wanted to reduce how many of these we were using, and bought some organic hemp fleece so that I could whip up some of my own handmade gDiapers soakers. And if I’m going to all that trouble, why not make them look cute? It also gave me a good opportunity to play with sharp curves on my serger – something I’d <del>been fearing</del> put off learning for quite some time.

It’s a little hard to tell in this photo, but the fleece has two distinct sides. One side is a knit, and the other side looks like the inside of a sweatshirt. It’s totally your preference on which side you have as the outer side, but I chose to have the two knit sides facing, and the soft fuzzy side showing.

The fleece comes as a tube, 27″ wide, so when cut it is 54″ wide by whatever length you buy. I just started with one yard, and was able to get 10 double-layer soakers out of it. I started by cutting it open, then doing a wash and dry cycle a total of 3 times. The amazing quality to this stuff is that the more you wash and dry, the softer and more absorbent they become. Once washed it was about 31″ long, and so I planned to cut my pieces about 6″ x 13″ so I could have some wiggle room – I had a hunch that my not-so-incredible serger curve skills would shine through. (*this can totally be done with a sewing machine that has a zig-zag stitch, and would probably turn out prettier than my initial serger attempts! You can either go straight to zig-zagging around the entire piece, or you could start with a straight stitch around to secure all the layers, and then finish the edges with the zig-zag.*)

After cutting the washed piece in half, leaving me with a ~31″ x 27″ piece that was then folded in half. I cut that into 6 slices.

Then squared off the edges. Nothing exact here…

Then I went through my fabric scraps and picked a lot of cute larger pieces. Many that had been used for quilting hadn’t been washed yet, so I gave them a good steam and pressing. It surprised me to see how picky I was at picking fabrics to decorate pee reservoirs.

Next, I lined them up like little soldiers with their respective pretty front.

I learned the hard way – make sure when you construct these that you place them through the serger with the the decorative fabric on top. I had significantly less shifting of the print when I did this. I also learned another lesson the hard way – mark the rounded corners on the print. Even if you don’t mimic the curves exactly, you’ll be a lot*** closer to the shape you want then if you just eye-ball it like I did for the first few. Doh.

Once you’ve got the layers sewn together you’ll want to secure your serger strings. If you’ve gone with the zig-zag method you can either just backstitch a few times, or you could even tie your threads, and bury them like I did below. Or, you could just leave them as-is and try your luck :) I used a bodkin, threaded the strings through the eye, and tunneled them underneath the stitches – only like an inch or so, then snipped off the excess.

And here they are. I know, I know… the green one is missing. Its currently undergoing very strict quality testing. I did buy an additional two yards once these were made, as I knew that ten wouldn’t be quite enough, and for now it seems that the littlest one needs them in every diaper. I read that the Bamboo/Hemp Fleece may be more absorbent, so I’m eager to put that to the test. Have you made any of your own cloth diapering supplies? If so, what’s been your experience, and where do you shop?

***Finally, have a look at the difference between the marked and unmarked soakers:

I had suuuuuch big plans, but then life happened, and all I got was this t-shirt (or 3 in my case). Isn’t this everyone’s lament for Kids Clothes Week? It was all set up so perfectly. Hubby was even OUT.OF.TOWN. for 4 of the 7 nights. You would’ve thought I’d be swimming in free time. Ha! Is any mom-of-two-under-two ever swimming in free time? These Oliver + S Class Picnic Blouses were cut out months ago, at the same time I cut out the After School Shirts. I thought that gave me a huge leg up and that I’d be on to other projects in no time. Because I sew at a turtle’s pace, you’ll get to enjoy all of my would-be KCW garments for weeks to come. Lucky you!

I was gleefully surprised to find out that these 2T tops would still fit Elise beautifully. I was concerned that I’d have to do some length-adding-trickery, or just put them in the closet until Juliet was big enough to wear them if they were too small across the chest. Neither fear was realized, and Elise should get some great wear out of these at least through the end of Spring.

I pretty much stuck to the pattern, and only deviated when it was time for the sleeve cuffs. Again with the sleeves? When it works, it works.

The first print used was Sarah Jane’s Sea Flowers in Blossom. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite designers. Her prints are so charming and sweet without being novelty-like or too juvenile.

Up next is Riley Blake’s Seaside Beach Chair in Cream. I love that it’s got a vintage feel to it. The skirt is the Oliver + S Music Class Skirt, in a green corduroy, sewn by my Mother-in-Law.

And finally, Robert Kaufman’s London Calling Lawn Ditsy Floral in Spring. My pictures don’t really show it, but its a teensy bit smaller than the other two. That’s what happens when you sew on the sleeve incorrectly, and then have to cut out the serger stitches and add a whole new seam allowance after the fact :) Fortunately it still fits.

I’ll leave you with a shot of my new woven labels, now that I have them in the girls’ names too. I’m so excited to tell you about them soon!

I’m embarrassed to say that these Oliver + S After School shirts have been cut out and sitting around since October. We took a trip to San Francisco, then came the holidays, then a new baby, and my poor sewing machine sat neglected for quite some time. Simultaneously, Elise was rapidly sprouting, and all of her clothes are either too small, too short, or worn out.

The wide neck and the yoke really of this top caught my attention, and thought it would be a good opportunity to try out my snap press with some pretty metal snaps. My thinking was that it would save time in construction, as well as in dressing her. Only half this theory proved to be correct, as my dread of learning to use it (or messing it up, rather) caused me to keep putting it off. It ended up being so much easier than I thought it would be, and I think it gives the shirts a store-bought appearance, and really is so quick to open and close on a very active toddler. She even wants to help, of course. I’ve found the snaps to be very forgiving, which helps.

Two of the tops were made with prints from Fabric Finders. Their poplin is fantastic for apparel, as it’s really got a great hand, and a nice weight to it. The best part is that their fabric is 58″ wide, so you almost always have enough fabric in one yard to make just about any toddler outfit.

Although Elise is a peanut, she has a long-ish torso (plus an adorable pot belly), and I find that most tops, even 2T, are too short. Since I had cut this out months ago, it was no surprise that I needed to add a little length. That extra width comes in handy in situations like these, and the fabric that I needed to add the ruffle was no problem. You can see in the third print (Sandi Henderson’s Ginger Blossom) that the ruffle isn’t nearly as full, but still cute, and gets the job done.

Lastly, I did my new favorite modification, and that is to make gathered sleeves. It’s just a simple adjustment that makes toddler clothes that much easier to live in. Click here for my basic instructions. See how nicely they stay up? and out of the way? and clean? You’ll just have to take my word for it then.

We are trying to wean her off the pacifier, and only let her have it at nap time and bedtime. We store them in a drawer, and she knows where they’re kept. Here she is digging for some…

How about these pretty labels? More on those soon!

The Oliver + S 2+2 blouse has long been on my to-do list. I’ve been trying to get in the habit of making multiples whenever I sit down to sew. So much of the time spent crafting a garment is in the tracing, cutting out, learning the pattern, etc. Since time is of a premium now, I want to make the most of it. I picked out a few new prints and one of my favorite London Calling prints and got to work.

This first top was made with London Calling Paisley in spring. This 100% cotton fabric feels like Liberty of London – surely that was no accident.

The next top was made with Riley Blake Seaside Swim Trunks in Grey. Love these colors.

The second top was made using Belle’s Dream Clothesline Dresses in white. This one lined up fairly well!

I knew that the long sleeves would get quite messy when she was eating and playing, so instead of having a hemmed cuff, I made a casing and added 1/4″ elastic. It’s perfect, as now I can push her sleeves up while she eats, and they actually stay there. Success!

When I make another batch, I plan on adding an extra step and zigzagging the place where the front placket/opening meets under the patch. With a toddler that enjoys pulling on loose ties, those ties and what they’re attached to, get a lot of abuse. I also think I’ll try to skip the ties and do a cute little button and loop closure – those ties are simply too tempting for little hands!

I really enjoy Oliver + S patterns. I certainly have my favorites, and while I have always liked the Music Box jumper, I have not loved it. That was until I stumbled across a picture of it made in dark chambray, and I was forever changed. When Elise was just a baby, I was at a craft sale at this super quaint craft co-op in Atlanta called The Beehive. It was there that I found this adorable corduroy. I haven’t the slightest bit of information on it, though, as the selvage was blank. Have you seen it before?

This pretty fabric sat in my stash for a good while. I only had one precious yard of it, so I had to be selective about which pattern to use. Even though the pattern calls for 1 3/4 yards, I was able so squeak it out of the prewashed yard, with even a little to spare. Because this isn’t a unidirectional print, I was able to cut out all of the pieces by placing the body pieces next to each other in a yin-yang way, instead of end-to-end. Clear as mud, right?

This was actually made 5 months ago, to be used as a school photo/fall/Thanksgiving dress but I felt silly posting such old photos. Luckily, the dress still fits, and is an even better length for her now (its a size 2T). Since we’re having such crazy weather right now, where it’s extremely chilly this late in March, I still had a legitimate excuse to stick Elise in a corduroy dress.

This was an very well written pattern, and quick to put together. It took me two evenings to get from the tracing all the way to the hemming.

As you can see, its incredibly comfortable, and allows plenty of room for active toddler movement and doll hugging. An overall success.

Just when you think your heart is full, a little person comes along to show you that you still have plenty more room and capacity to love. Juliet joined us two months ago after 34 hours of labor and a C section – just to add the icing to my already delicious cake. To say it was a rough entry into this world would be quite an understatement, but her super sweet demeanor makes it so easy to forget all about that. Elise loves being a big sister – often gently caressing Juliet’s head, helping me burp her, and giving her lots of hugs and kisses. We do occasionally have to play referee to make sure that her hugs don’t actually strangle Juliet.

photo by Debbie Koehler of http://www.digitalmemoriesdk.com/caption

Now that we’re finally starting to catch our breath, I’m able to resume sewing again – hooray! Who knew that when you add a baby to the mix when you already have an extremely active toddler, that life would get …busy? But, oh so very good!

It had never occurred to me to make a Halloween costume for Elise. It just seemed like a fussy kind of project. But as I was browsing pictures of costumes online, trying to pick one out for the baby, I came across a Little Red Riding Hood costume. Nothing about it was fussy, and I knew I had the patterns for just about all the pieces already on hand.

Her skirt was the Oliver + S lazy days skirt pattern, and the blouse is just a shortened Leila and Ben sweet dress. The cummerbund was self drafted onto felt, and 3 brown ribbons sewn on. These three pieces came together quite quickly, and it was the official cape that I saved for last. The cape of course came from Liesl Gibson’s Little Things to Sew book, and was shortened to a more appropriate length for the wee one. The pattern only comes in children’s medium and large, and while still wearing 18m – 2T, she definitely needed a small.

The exterior is a crushed red velvet, and the lining is from Sandi Henderson’s Meadowsweet collection. All paired up with white tights, black shoes and a little basket, she was as cute as could be!

If I had to do it over again, I would’ve turned the blouse into a onesie. Every time we picked her up, or she ran around, the shirt would come untucked, and there I was, unable to help myself from chasing her down to tuck it back in so LRRH could always be presentable. It would also save time to measure the chubbiest part of the belly for the cummerbund, instead of the skinniest section just under it. Would certainly keep you from having to add a 4″ piece of felt at the end.

But all in all a very cute finish.

And lastly, when she’s tired of running around, she can finally ride – in her very own cozy coupe! Certainly no Little Red Riding Hood should ever be caught without her getaway vehicle.

Onto the second batch of corduroy pants. The Oliver + S After School pants were an obvious choice for Fall pants. The first batch was such a success, that I was quite excited to get started on the second set. I had read on the Oliver + S forums about sizing these for cloth diapers, and was prepared to size these the same way.

These were made with a 3T rise, 2T width, and 12-18m length. I think I’d like to make a few more pairs, because, although they fit Elise quite well, they are a touch snug when she sits. The place where the pocket’s side top edge meets the side hem was begging to open up. Enter the bartack.

When bartacked, the pockets seem to really be able to withstand all the wear and tear this little one puts them through. She doesn’t stop moving.

I think if I make them again soon, I’ll do a reverse of the original changes – 3T width, 2T rise (possibly 3T), and 12-18m. I think the extra width would help with any snugness, and still not be too big.

Cloth diapered butts are definitely the cutest.

And now the tan pair:

When she’s standing these pants fit just great. I’m wondering if I raise the pockets up some so that the top edge doesn’t fall directly midthigh, but closer to the crease between the belly and the legs.

Her newest toy – a hand-me-down from some awesome neighbors.

I love that a little bit of the pocket lining shows through.

I love these pants. Next time I’m definitely going to add the ruffles.

Elise is in desperate need of pants! She is in a decidedly different size than she was a year ago, and our record heat summer only meant that I made an abundance of shorts and skirts!

I bought some corduroy and picked two Oliver + S patterns to go along with them. The first batch of pants were made from the Sandbox pants pattern. I really love this pattern.

It fits Elise so well and was a breeze to sew up. Because she is petite, and a wee chunky and wears bulky cloth diapers, I took this opportunity to completely customize the pants to fit her cute butt. These are 12-18m in length, 2T width, and 3T rise. They fit beautifully. The only other change I made was to the waist band. The instructions call for the back half of the waist band to be elastic, and the front halves to be drawstring. When I initially did that, they just weren’t snug enough.

Although this 15m old baby can wear a 3T rise, the place where pants rest on her, under the baby pot belly, is apparently small, so I pulled out the drawstring and elastic and made the entire thing elastic. This fixed the problem of the pants hanging a little low since they didn’t drop as much.

She’s enamored with the watering can at the moment.

This picture just makes me giggle. She looks so tiny!

I love this pattern so much I’m currently scouring my stash to find more good choices for the fall/winter.

Feeling a bit lazy in the sewing room lately. I wanted to make something for the wee one that would be quick and cute, and I thought the Sweet Dress (for babies) by Leila and Ben would fit the bill. I picked out three fabrics that I had stashed for a while and seemed appropriate. Elise is a petite little thing, and when I held up a RTW dress of hers that was a bit long, I was surprised that it looked like the 3m size would be appropriate length-wise. But, considering she is a chunk, I did add an extra inch to the 12m width. I made the first one, and it came out really cute! I finished it while she was asleep, and my darling hubby got up with her the next morning and let me sleep in while he took her to the park. He took a couple pictures and I could see that it was definitely too short. So it was decided that each dress would get a simple ruffle at the hem. All in all it took me 3 nights to make the 3 dresses, while I was catching up on reruns of Kitchen Nightmares. The first dress is one of my all time favorite Alexander Henry prints, Camelia in Aqua. I believe its long out of print. I made the ruffle on this one a bit longer so she could get more wear out of it since we’re soon out of our dress wearing seasons.

The second dress is another Alexander Henry print – Tillbrook Fairies. So cute and whimsey for a little girl.

Finally, the last dress is part of the Ellie Fun collection by Karen Neuberger for Quilting Treasures. I’m not really a fan of novelty fabric choices for kids, but I thought that this could be pulled off tastefully – youthful without being splattered with Dora, although I’m sure that day will come, not by my choice.

The pattern itself was really straight forward. I used my serger for 90% of the dress – just the arm hem and ruffle hem was done by machine. My hope is that Elise can wear it at least through next spring, since we’re already starting to get the first glimpses of Fall. And if not, the little sister (!!) that is on the way should be able to get some use out of these as well :)

It has been exactly 3 months since I last posted! Life got realllly hectic. 3 days after my last post we found out that Elise was going to be a big sister! (enter fatigue…) They will be 18m apart when this little bean arrives early next year.

Then, a week apart from each other I had my board exam and Elise’s 1st birthday. Busy and busier. All the studying, party planning, sneaking in naps, whew… it was tough. But, the birthday party was a grand success, and Elise even started walking on her birthday to celebrate. I found out about two weeks ago that I passed the board exam with flying colors – rejoice! – and now I’m finally getting more energy and was able to sit down and finish the dress I had started for Elise to wear on her big day. About a month before the test I realized that she likely wasn’t going to be walking for the party, and that I really had to get to studying, so I put the dress down with hopes to finish it later.

Later finally came and she is now 13 months old! I have no idea where she’ll actually wear a dress like this, but its hers to enjoy. I had no clue just how long this dress would take. I didn’t think it was that much hand embroidery, but it still took me a long time. Plus all the lace insertion. For the slip, I kept things very simple and just did a scalloped edge all around. It was only my second time using this foot – and first time doing a scalloped edge – so its definitely not perfect, but still came out pretty well as the simple slip it was intended to be. The instructions call for some hand embroidery just below the neck of the slip, but because it would be visible through the lace insertion (and because I’m tired of hand embroidery for the moment!) I just skipped it altogether. The pattern was written by Jeannie Baumeister. She writes the Old Fashioned Baby patterns, and specializes in adorable heirloom style garments. This was the Baby Rose Raglan Dress

She required bribery with my new Aurofil thread. Otherwise, she was only interested in sitting with her back towards me.

The dainty slip.

I’m going to rewind to her birthday party for a moment. I made the stupid.stupid.stupid decision of handing my camera over to someone else, and so, not only are the photos “eh”, but a lot of the little details that I wanted captured were not. All my fault – yes!

I went with the theme of an ice cream social, a very simple one at that. We did lots of finger foods and funsize candies in little jars.

Elise hanging with her besties

Elise has multiple food allergies, so I made her cake myself

After her cake was smashed, we placed the 3 ice cream flavors in its place. They were all placed in these adorable glass containers and people could scoop their own sundae, topped by goodies of their choosing! Cherries, mini m&m’s, nuts, sprinkles, chocolate chips, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. I think there were even peanut butter chips? Who can remember all these details? The ice cream was a hit!

I think she liked her cake!

Blurry photo – but the only one I had of the bunting I made for her party! Look at that cute butt :)

Now that the dress is finally completed, I’m looking forward to sewing things that don’t take months to complete!

I was so excited when I came across this pattern. The little girl on the front is what totally sold me. I had a bit of a splurge at some point not too long ago when fabric.com was having a sale on their voiles. I thought this light weight summery print would be a good choice, and it wasn’t that expensive so if I totally botched it, I wouldn’t be too upset.

Despite a few hiccups in understanding the pattern, I think it came together nicely. There were a few points in the pattern where the “right” side or “wrong” side wasn’t specified, and other things weren’t clear, or pieces didn’t fit together properly, but that didn’t stop my determination. Do you ever have patterns that you cut out, but then you just stall out on? From the point I cut this out (all 9 pieces, I think!?) it just sat on my ironing board for days and days. I just couldn’t get motivated. I can’t stand to have things on my to-do list, so two days ago, I decided that the wrap dress’s time had come. It came together much quicker than I had envisioned (despite all the rigging necessary), and I’m glad I persevered. I don’t know if I’ll make it again, but then again, after the first time you learn all the pitfalls, and I think that the cuteness of this dress might just be worth the hassle.

Such cute proportions!

I just recently bought number stamps on Etsy so I could put the sizes in the tag.

I think my only complaint about the completed dress is that its a bit, um, revealing. If she was any older, I think Daddy would have problems letting her wear this out of the house. And I wouldn’t blame him one bit.

I think she’s pretty pleased with her new dress.

I was glad this dress gave me a chance to do a great deal of the construction on the serger. I’m really working at improving my skills with it, and now, can’t imagine sewing without it. I’m quite certain there was no other way to finish the edge of the flounce. I was able to use the 3 thread rolled edge, and it worked beautifully. I tried the rolled hem foot, and with the amount of curve it had, there was no way this was going to look good. What a mess!

And for the final pose of the shoot, I present to you “growling baby”:

Well, not really, but her first one from me. Little Folks by Anna Maria Horner is my all-time-favorite fabric line. I have had to resist the urge to fleece our savings to buy bolts of each print. I’ve settled for a half yard of each. But I wanted to save that, untouched, to make a big quilt for our bed, so I ordered a FQ bundle of the Sugar Cookie palette.

I wanted a very simple pattern; something that would showcase the prints, and a simple quilting to keep it soft and pliable. This is roughly 36″ x 42″, and 3″ squares are used. This is a gloriously soft quilt. The quilting is just a stitch-in-the-ditch pattern, nothing fancy. At the bottom right you can see where I wrote her a little note on the back.

I think my favorite part of the quilt is the pieced binding. These two particular prints have a lot of design elements in common, in addition to the color, and so it actually flowed quite well in a pieced fashion.

And how neat is that chair that’s in the first photo? Elise’s grandfather, “Pa Pa”, made that for her. He is an amazingly talented woodworker, and makes each grandchild their own rocking chair. Hanging next to the chair are two Cranky Princess prints I bought from Heather Ross. So cute!

All in all, I think Elise approves of her quilt, and I hope that she gets many years out of it. I also hope that more and more fabric designers continue to release fabric printed on mediums other than quilting weight cotton; because although it is typically more expensive, it is undoubtedly worth it.

I had grandiose plans for KCWC. I had 3 additional patterns set out, fabric washed, that unfortunately were never realized. Because of this dress. I have loved this dress since the I first saw the pattern. Having now made it, I still love the dress, and plan on making it again, but I plan on serging all the inside edges instead of the french seams that are used throughout. Also, the biggest problem I had was trying to sew the cuffs down on the sleeve, so I’m going to tackle that differently next time as well. I found that method to be almost impossible for clothes this small (18m). The presser foot barely fit in the cuff. Because of this minor issue, it took almost 4 hours to complete the sleeve construction, and that was before I even attached them to the body of the dress! Most of that time was with the seam ripper…

Despite my grumbles, this dress really did come out cute, didn’t it? I didn’t bother with any Elise action shots because I think she would look a bit silly in a dress that came down to her ankles. But this is going to sit patiently in her closet until the fall, when I think she will be able to pull it off well, which is why I chose the long sleeve version. I do suppose that the Lisette sailboats aren’t very “fall” but I couldn’t resist – they are just so cute. The fabric is lightweight enough that I think she could wear this in the summer if it fits her by then, so maybe not a bad choice after all.

I also had to include a label, since the only real distinguishing feature of front vs. back was the small difference in yoke size. I love that this dress has little pockets, although I imagine they won’t get much use at that age? I have no idea.

And the back – so simple and sweet. Hopefully she’ll enjoy wearing it!

Even though the other patterns weren’t finished in time for KCWC, I’ve still got the fabric ready to go, and I’m excited to get started on them. And for the next KCWC, I’ll be prepared, with my patterns already cut out, fabric washed, and neatly stacked awaiting kickoff.

For Day 3 of KCWC, I made Ruthie’s Romper by Izzy and Ivy. Its looking like I’m spending all of KCW with elastic thread, but I assure you there is none involved in the patterns ahead! I’m pretty pleased with the results. I made the 12m size, and it will hopefully fit her as we get into summer. By then she should be walking, which is when this should really get some wear, as its not so crawling-friendly. I altered the pattern just a wee bit. Instead of the two ruffles at the feet, I did one ruffle at a smaller size. (I’m a bit ruffle-phobic as so many patterns these days seem to exploit them so) and instead of 4 straps I just used two longer ones. The pattern goes up to size 8, but I can really think its ideal for little kids, maybe 3 and under?

You can’t even see her little feet yet!

There they are!

It’s a success!

A little “romper” tag. Matt said “just in case you forget what its called”. Oh, those boys.

Oh, and other great news! I finally used my rolled hemmer foot for the first time, and I’m in love. Why has the rest of the sewing world kept this secret from me?

Now for the rest of the photos you’ve been waiting for – Elise doing her part for KCWC Days 1 and 2. Finally, right? Okay, now for the action photos of the shorts from Day 1:

A certain someone was busy rummaging through all of my fabric.

How cute is that butt?

And the tag that was finally placed so we could all tell front from back:

Yup – just in case we forgot what they were.

And for Day 2:

Not so much liking all these clothing changes.
