Welcome to week 2 of the Happy Flower Quiltalong! Its been so fun watching what you’ve been creating – what a fun and talented community we have! If you’re just joining us, you can grab Atsuko Matsuyama’s newly translated and re-released book by Zakka Workshop in a number of places, such as Sunny Day Supply, Sew Stitching Happy, and Amazon.
The week two blocks were two favorite of mine from the start, and I was excited to sew them up!
Here’s block 3, which I used exclusively Lecien for – I love how cheerful this is!:
And block 4 is a mix of Moda Bonnie and Camille Vintage Picnic and tiny Dottie in Navy, and Sevenberry floral:

Hi friends! Welcome to the kick off of the Happy Flower Quilt Along! We are beginning our year long adventure of stitching up the cover quilt on Atsuko Matsyuma’s epic book (that has been translated and re-released by Zakka Workshop) Happy Flower Quilts. Kristyne (@prettybyhand), Wynn (@zakkaart) and I (@ohhowsweetco) will be your hosts for this fun adventure!
I’ll be starting with block 1, and showing you two blocks per week. Just like reading a book, we’ll start in the upper left corner of the quilt and work our way to the right, and down each row. This means that we’ll be doing an appliquè block and a pieced block each week (some times there will be a single piece of fabric, as you’ll see in the quilt).

So, onto the blocks!
Block 1: I was so excited to use some of Lecien’s newest release, Atsuko Matsuyama’s Old New 30’s. Those little cherries are the cutest! I paired the prints with some dots from their Dots and Gingham Checks collection, and I love how this little block turned out!
Block 2: This block has a Robert Kaufman Sevenberry background, and I used a favorite Yuwa Atsuko print for the flower. The bright pink/dot is a tiny dottie from Moda, the stem is a Kaufman architextures and I’m not sure where the green dots are from…
Its certainly a challenge to plan out the colors for a scrappy quilt that will be made over the course of a year, so I’m being sure to consistently use prints and colors that I love so that it will hopefully be cohesive in the end. I might end up re-doing a block here and there so it all fits together better when completed, but its such a fun process, and I’m trusting that it will all work together!
